Mark Starkey recalls Scarborough's Tunnel
Club....
"The Tunnel Club was where it was at in
the nineties in Scarborough. DJ Mark
Starkey playing the choicest indie tunes
around.
The club was the upstairs part of the
Underground nightclub and was a right
dive with an incredible atmosphere.
Upstairs comprised of a front bar with
quiet music, broken pool tables and god
knows why but thousands of arcade
machines! - again most of them broken!
The back room was known as the Tunnel
Club and that's where it all happened..
The bouncers never used to come
upstairs as there was never any trouble
and if you did open a fire door a pigeon
would fly in! Also when it rained the roof
used to leak through the three floors
above!
After a good few years management
decided to renovate the place - worst
move ever. It then became known as the
Works and died a death within a few
months. I also made the worst DJ move
ever and started playing trendy music
when it reopened as Kings nightclub.
However to this day it is indie music that
flows through my viens.
On a recent night out I was badgered into
setting this group up with a view to
making a gig happen. Not once did I
expect all of this to come about... From
the bottom of my indie heart - thank you
all!
